How Elephants Talk

Elephants are famous for their memory, but they are also excellent communicators.

Much of their conversation cannot be heard by humans at all.

They use very deep sounds that can travel for several kilometers.

The animals feel these sounds through their feet as well as their ears.

In this way, groups far apart can find each other in the dry season.

Researchers in Kenya have recently found something even more surprising.

Elephants seem to use a kind of name for each member of the family.

When a mother calls a certain name, only one young elephant answers.
