In April 1912 the Titanic left England on her first voyage to New York.
She was the largest ship in the world, and many people believed that she could not sink.
On the fourth night, in the cold North Atlantic, she hit an iceberg.
Water poured into the ship, and within three hours she had disappeared.
There were far too few lifeboats for the 2,200 people on board.
More than 1,500 passengers and crew lost their lives.
After the disaster, new rules said that every ship must carry enough lifeboats for everyone.
The wreck was only found in 1985, almost four kilometers under the sea.
