The Little Ball in the Sky

On 4 October 1957 the Soviet Union sent a small metal ball into space.

It was called Sputnik, and it was not much bigger than a beach ball.

It did little except send a simple beep back to Earth.

Even so, people around the world listened to that sound on their radios.

Americans were shocked, because they had believed that they led in science.

The space race had begun, and both countries spent enormous sums on it.

Sputnik burned up after only three months in orbit.

Twelve years later, two American astronauts walked on the Moon.
