Traditional Korean houses have a special heating system called ondol.

When a fire is lit in the kitchen, hot air passes under the floor of the room.

So the floor warms up and the whole room stays warm for a long time.

In the past, people sat on the floor instead of on chairs, and slept on the floor.

Today, even apartments often use a system that heats the floor with hot water.

That is why, in Korea, you always take off your shoes when you enter a home.
